Message from the President

On behalf of the Executive Council of FASAS, I would like to welcome you to this FASAS website which I hope reflects a revitalised Federation.

The Federation of Asian Scientific Academies and Societies, or FASAS, was first formed in New Delhi in 1984 with twelve scientific academies and societies from within Asia as its Founding Members. The principle objectives of FASAS are the advancement of science and technology, and the organisation of national and regional programmes for the development of the member countries. Since then, FASAS has organised many activities and programmes to fulfil its objectives.

After more than eighteen years of existence, it was decided in Kuala Lumpur in 2002 that a review of the FASAS Constitution and Bye-Laws was necessary to ensure that the operation, activities and programmes of the Federation are in line with the socio-economic development of the Asia Pacific region and the latest development of science and technology in the world. As such, a new Constitution and its Bye-Laws, taking cognisance of the above, was adopted at the FASAS Council Meeting in New Delhi , India on 24 October 2002 . The new Executive Council of FASAS was also elected at this Meeting.

The new Constitution emphasizes science and technology for development in Asia and the promotion of the integration of science and technology into national development planning and policy-making processes. It also proposes to enhance the impact and contribution of scientific academies and societies in national and regional development.

In order to achieve the objectives, the new Constitution also proposes to focus on the main areas of promoting best practices in the teaching of science at all levels, and increasing awareness on the importance of science and technology in governance, business and everyday life.

With a new Constitution focusing on key areas in the development of science and technology in the Asia Pacific, I would like to invite all member academies and societies to take an active part in all FASAS activities and programmes. With your full support, I am sure that a revitalised FASAS will play a key and significant role in the scientific and socio-economic development of the Asia Pacific region.

With best wishes.
Academician Tan Sri Datuk Dr Omar Abdul Rahman
